Vatican Day
Today we took an early guided tour of the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel (City Wonders). Following the tour, we visited St. Peter’s Basilica. Both the museum collection and the basilica were grand and opulent beyond words. The wealth of the Catholic church over the centuries could be seen in graphic detail – the chapel ceiling, the Pieta in the Basilica and the enormity of the Vatican grounds and buildings. I don’t think I have been in a bigger church!

Pompeii and Herculaneum

We said before that our hotel in Rome is near the Spanish Steps. Most everyone has heard of the Spanish Steps, but we learned that they are really French. The story goes that the French built a Catholic church at the top of a hill and had problems attracting worshipers because of the steep climb. So, the French built steps from the piazza below which was where Spain had their embassy. Romans decided to call them Spanish Steps because the embassy was there first.

Today’s adventure took us on a 2-hour train ride from Rome south past Naples to Pompeii. We had arranged a private guide to show us both Pompeii and Herculaneum, cities buried when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. Pompeii is the more completely excavated, but Herculaneum is better preserved because it was buried under lava rather than ash. The frescos were preserved so well that it made the cities seem almost modern.

Our guide was a little over the top. Loud and rushing us through. It was an exhausting day because of the travel, the heat and our rapid-fire guide. We will sleep well.

Rome City Bike Tour

Today was our city bike tour day. It was a 4-hour cruise with ten tourists from the US, Canada and UK with a Dutch guide, Imka. We hit all the major sites in about 4 hours. Imka knew all the back streets.

Constantine Arch near the Coliseum

We arrived in Rome on schedule early Sunday morning. We have a centrally located hotel, La Lumiere di Piazza di Spangna recommended by Rick & Mary. Tried out the Metro taking it to walk the Coliseum, Forum and associated areas. We needed the walking around to get our clocks reset even though we got some sleep in our “lay flat” seats on the plane over the pond. Weather was sunny and warm. Everybody was out, especially at the popular sites. It got real crowded at Trevi Fountain and around the Coliseum.

This my first post. I am trying this out so we can post pictures from our travels and make note of significant events, activities and places as we travel.

We leave for Rome this week. We will have 4 days there doing a city bike tour, the Vatican tour and explore Pompey. Then on to Riccione on the Adriatic coast to bike out of the Belvedere bike hotel. Finally we take a night ferry to Split in Croatia for 8 days of hiking the Dalmatian coast with outfitter Walker-Ryder.

One of my favorite pictures from a 2014 trip to Italy. This one from Lucca.
